What happens to transparency when converting PNG to JPG

JPG has no alpha channel, so transparent regions cannot survive the trip. This converter flattens transparency onto a clean white background — the standard expected by portals, marketplaces and print shops. If you need the transparency kept, stay with PNG and use the PNG compressor instead; converting is for when small size matters more than a clear background.

Why JPG is 5–10× smaller than PNG for photos

PNG stores every pixel losslessly, which photographs punish with huge file sizes. JPG discards micro-detail the eye does not notice, shrinking the same photo dramatically. At the default quality of 90, the converted JPG is visually indistinguishable from the source PNG at a fraction of the weight — ideal for email, forms and web pages.

When you should keep PNG instead

Screenshots full of small text, logos with hard edges, and any graphic needing transparency reproduce better as PNG — JPG compression smears crisp lines into faint halos. The rule of thumb: photographs and scans convert to JPG happily; interface graphics and line art stay PNG.

Frequently asked questions

What happens to the transparent parts of my PNG?

They are filled with white, the standard for documents and portal uploads. Keep the file as PNG if you need transparency preserved.

How much smaller will the JPG be?

Photographic PNGs typically shrink 80–90%. Graphics with few colors shrink less but still significantly.

Can I convert several PNGs at once?

Yes — up to 3 files at a time free. Larger batches with ZIP download are a Pro feature.

Is anything uploaded?

No. Conversion happens entirely on your device in the browser.
